St. Olaf Catholic Church
Norge, VA
Brawer Hauptman + Larkin designed this new Roman Catholic church as a multi-phased project for a rural parish located between Richmond and Williamsburg, Virginia. Phase 1 was a new commons that will serve as the main entrance to the complex when the future worship space is completed. This phase incorporated the renovated original church building. Phase 2 is a 14,000 square-foot building that includes a dramatic worship space seating 600. The steel and wood design uses timber bow trusses to support the main roof and whose curved bottoms are a major visual element in the space. A 60-foot spire topped by a 30-foot cross has a brick base that houses a small chapel. Future phases include an education wing and several expansion projects.
